BEYOND
BOLLYWOOD -
A tour of Contemporary South Asian Cinema
ImagineAsia
is the British Film Institute's biggest ever project. From May
through to November 2002, this festival celebrates the
art of film from South Asia including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
and Bangladesh and by Asians in Britain and around the world.
BEYOND
BOLLYWOOD provides a unique opportunity to see the best of contemporary
independent films that carry on the great traditions set by internationally
renowned directors such as Satyajit Ray and Shyam Benegal. Showcasing
the work of acclaimed arthouse directors, these films explore themes,
stories and styles of filmmaking which are rarely embraced by mainstream
Bollywood.
The
tour features performances from many of the subcontinent's leading
actors, from Om Puri (East is East) to Nasserudin Shah (Monsoon
Wedding), Seema Biswas (Bandit Queen) to the reigning queen of Bollywood,
Ashwarya Rai.
BEYOND
BOLLYWOOD offers the first comprehensive selection of Indian arthouse
and political cinema ever to tour the UK. Prepare to open your eyes
to other worlds.
