Watermans
is delighted to host an extensive collection of miniature paintings
by London born artists and twin sisters Amrit and Rabindra Kaur
Singh, considered amongst the freshest of the new British
artists (The Daily Telegraph).
Whilst
drawing essentially on the Indian miniature tradition, their award
winning paintings combine elements from Western and Eastern aesthetics
to create a unique genre within British Art practice which challenges
existing stereotypes in Contemporary art and seeks to redefine generally
accepted, narrow perceptions of heritage and identity - exploring
cultural, social and political issues of global significance within
a highly decorative, often witty and symbolic style which has universal
appeal and transcends cultural barriers.
Their
work is in private as well as public collections including Glasgow
Gallery of Modern Art, National Museums & Galleries on Merseyside,
The New Gallery Walsall and Royal Museums of Scotland. They have
attracted international media attention including a Granada TV documentary
profile. More recent Arts Council commissioned film about their
work, Alone Together' won 'The Best Film On Art' prize at
the Asolo International Film Festival of Art Films 2001. In addition
they were short-listed for the Asian Women of Achievement Awards
2001 (in the category of Arts & Culture).
