Lennox
Lewis (World Heavyweight Boxing Champion), Nasser Hussain (England
Cricket Captain) and Lawrence Dallaglio (Wasps Rugby Captain) are
just three of the UK's best loved sporting heroes whose portraits
will be featured in the critically acclaimed artist, Sharon Lutchman's
forthcoming exhibition, SPORTING IMAGE which will run at The Lennox
Gallery in London from Tuesday 28th January 2003 - Saturday 8th
February 2003.
A critically
acclaimed artist, with a history of successful exhibitions - the
most recent of which was The New Brits at The Gallery in Cork Street
in 1997, Lutchman has established herself in the fields of portraiture
and abstract art. Previous exhibitions have included included Ruins
In Time, a study of Bombay which was exhibited both in India and
at London's Connoisseur Gallery, Filmi Geet, an exhibition exploring
the world of Bollywood movies at The Nehru Gallery in Mayfair and
at the Museum of the Moving Image, The South of the World, an exhibition
shown at the National Museum of Sicily in conjunction with the International
Congress on the Third World, Warriors in the Forest, the first series
of Lutchman's Bollywood journeys, an exhibition opened by the actor
Saeed Jaffrey at The Commonwealth Institute and Jazz and the City
which was opened by the legendary George Melly, a keen collector
of Lutchman's work at The Barbican.
A much
sought after portrait artist, Sharon Lutchman's subjects have included
leading members of the business community amongst whom are G. K.
Noon, the
Indian food mogul, Lord Desai, the economist, Professor Sen, nobel
laureate and Master of Trinity College, and the actor Meera Syal,
all of whom bought both paintings and drawings from Lutchman.
SPORTING
IMAGE which will be officially opened by the Right Hon Tessa Jowell,
Minister for Culture, Media and Sports, also includes portraits
of Tony Bullimore, the yachtsman, Tanni Grey the four-time Paralympic
Gold Medalist, cricketing hero Wasim Akram and Jan Britten, former
Captain of the England Women's Cricket Team, Dean Ward, Courtney
Rombolt and Paul Attwood the British Bobsleigh Winter Olympics Team.
Of
Asian descent, Lutchman was born in South Africa but moved to Leicester
as a child. Following her schooling she moved to London to study
at St Martin's College of Art where she gained a BA Honours. In
1989, in addition to her artwork, she embarked on a programme of
educational projects which included residencies at various schools
and colleges.
For
the purposes of this exhibition Lutchman has worked in oils, charcoal,
and pencil but regularly uses various artistic mediums in her work,
including acrylics, montage and 3D.
SPORTING
IMAGE is testament to the talent and versality of Sharon Lutchman
and will further endorse her reputation as one of the UK's most
exciting, up and coming artists.
