A CELEBRATION, SATURDAY 26 MARCH 2005 |
|

Gujarat comes to the Royal Albert Hall in an extravaganza of traditional
Raas, folk songs and music on Saturday 26 March 2005. The folk dances
of Gujarat are well known for their vigour and grace. The Bharwads
will perform a Hudo Rass (Shepherd Dance) and the Mers of Porbandar
will present the famous Mer Raas, a warrior dance.

and Kandia Kouyate, artists from UK, India and Mali. The project will

as well as create awareness of the different genres of music prevalent

have a long life of its own.

The
Indian Music summer school offers eight full days of expert tuition
in the three principal vocal genres of dhrupad, khyal and thumri and
also on sitar. The school gives an opportunity for people to learn
directly from Indian masters, in the spirit of the traditional guru-shisya
parampara. Participants choose the genre in which they wish to specialise,
and the relevant artist becomes their guru for the week.

new dimensions in rhythm and melody - RHYTHMSCAPE- has been widely
acclaimed in India and this is their first tour out of India. What

from others in this field. The band is led by Bikram Ghosh on a multi-percussion

STAR SEARCH NETS OVER 700 APPLICANTS |

Over
700 people applied from across the country and the best 150 contestants
have been shortlisted by AsianStarSearch. Launched by Kuljit Bhamra,
a pioneer of the UK Asian music scene, the nationwide competition
aims to discover the next generation of British Asian pop stars. Contestants
who can MC or sing in Hindi, Punjabi or Urdu were invited to live
auditions, the ultimate prize is a recording contract with Kuljit
Bhamra's Keda records.

Music Circuit is proud to debut to the UK the Black Sufis of Gujarat.
The Black Sidis from Gujarat are a community of East African origin
who came to India seven centuries ago and made Gujarat their home.
The carried with them their exceptionally rich musical tradition and
kept it alive and flourishing through the generations, unknown to
the rest of the world. Tour runs from 27th September - 6th October
