POWER
NOT POUNDS MOTIVATES LONDON ENTPRENEURS
(24 November 2005)
Making
your own decisions is considered the best aspect of owning and running
a business according to three out of four (75%) people in a survey
commissioned by Business Link for London, the small business advice
and support service for the Capital. The research, which polled
2,452 Londoners* about their motivation for owning their own business,
highlighted that many people consider that making money for themselves
(69%) and having the status of 'boss' (64%) are secondary to the
ability to make their own decisions.
The
survey also revealed differences of opinion between the genders.
Nearly two thirds of men (60%) prized being the master of their
own destiny compared to only 52% of women. Instead, 57% of women
said they craved freedom from the normal 9 to 5 compared with only
45% of men polled. Only a third of men (37%) viewed the ability
to balance work with other tasks as the biggest benefit. These responses
show a clear link between the differing priorities of men and women
in regards to their responsibilities for family and home life.
The
survey also showed a difference in preferences between age groups.
Over half (58%) of people in the 18 - 24 age group said that freedom
from the normal 9 to 5 would be the best aspect about running their
own business. Only 42% of the oldest age group - over 55 year olds
- felt the same way.
Commenting
on the research, Judith Rutherford, Business Link for London's Chief
Executive said: "Running a business offers a number of benefits
and for many people this means being able to take control over their
working lives. Advice and information is on offer to help people
towards taking the important first steps in starting up and realising
their dream of being their own boss."
