ITV
LONDON RESTAURANT AWARDS 2004
(10 March 2004)
The
Painted Heron and Hakkasan are celebrating after winning the Indian
Restaurant and Oriental Restaurant of the Year Award respectively
at this year's Tio Pepe ITV London Restaurant Awards on 8 March.
The Painted Heron fought off competition from Chowki, New Tayyab,
Zaika and last year's winner Chutney Mary. Despite narrowly missing
out in the Indian Restaurant of the Year category, Chowki's popularity
was confirmed as it won the Evening Standard London Tonight Award
as voted for by readers and viewers.
In
acknowledgement of his flair, expertise and encouragement of new
talent, multi award winner Cyrus Todiwala MBE was bestowed with
the honour of Outstanding Contribution to London Restaurants. As
Executive Chef for Café Spice Namaste restaurant group, Todiwala
is renowned for his innovative and fresh approach to Indian cuisine.
His dedication to training and nurturing of new talent in the industry,
mark him out as an exemplary figure.
This
is the eighth year of the Awards and more than 6,000 restaurants
have once again competed for recognition in the 15 highly coveted
award categories. Matthew Fort, The Guardian Food Editor and chairman
of the 2004 judging panel says: "Judging these Awards doesn't
get any easier! Each year we see an abundance of brilliant new restaurants
emerge to challenge the established favourites. Deciding the finest
in each category is every bit as demanding as it is pleasurable."
