INDIAN OCEAN, one of India’s hottest bands, kicks off their UK national tour at Watermans, London’s premier Asian Arts venue.

Drawing on roots as diverse as ragas and rock, reggae and folk, jazz and pop, their music continues to escape categorisation, and incorporates traditional Indian hymns, chants and poetry into totally contemporary arrangements. The group once declared, 'We have only 'Indian Oceanised' our music, not patented any other musical fusion'.

Highly rhythmic yet engagingly melodic, Indian Ocean have built up a large and loyal following in India. Their work is often symphonic, building up layers of melody and percussion in a painterly way that belies the fact they are only a quartet. They had been together for almost a decade before they found enormous success with their album Desert Rain, a blend of Indian and Western contemporary music. Their third and latest release Kandisa is an intricately-woven compilation with selected lyrics in Hindi, Kashmiri, Bengali, Aramaic and Bhilali. It has received many accolades including a five-star rating from the Times of India.

The band comprise four members: Sushmit Sen (guitar and vocals), Asheem Chakravarty (tabla and tarang percussion and vocals), Rahul Ram (bass guitar and vocals), and Amit Kilam (drums, percussion gabgubi flute and vocals). As with Mrigya, this is the band's first UK performance.
