REMEMBER SHAKTI
2 - 9 November 2003
John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain V. Selvaganesh U.Shrinivas with special guest: Shankar Mahadevan .

Zakir HussainGuitar legend John McLaughlin and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain first took the world by storm in the mid-'70's with their band Shakti's supreme fusion of Indian classical music and jazz. Intelligence, beauty and power were the watchwords behind the three albums which Shakti produced, and these sentiments live on in its successor Remember SHAKTI which takes the synthesis to even greater heights.

For this UK tour McLaughlin and Hussain are joined by the ferocious talents of electric mandolin genius U. Shrinivas and percussion whiz-kid, the son of original Shakti member Vikku Vinayakram, V. Selvaganesh and the wonderful genius of singer Shankar Mahadevan.

SHAKTI which means energy in Sanskrit is the story of two great musicians and the meeting of two great traditions - jazz and Indian classical music. Together they reinvent music that is singular because of its plurality. While improvisation is always the hallmark of both traditions, allowing for each artist to express himself, the roots are not forgotten. The mastery and skill with which the artists interact in musical conversation is spellbinding. The combined passion of these fine musicians guarantees an atmosphere which is vibrant, sensuous, refined yet full of surprise and breathtaking.
