Series: Free Summer on the South Bank

Urban Temple - Angika Residency at London's South Bank Centre from Monday 4 - Friday 8 August 2003.A unique and exciting opportunity to see one of the UK's most dynamic and imaginative British Indian dance companies at work. Angika are committed to evolving the art of Bharata Natyam without mixing it with other dance forms for contemporary audiences and are well known for their diverse collaborations and high quality productions. As part of this residency, Angika will come together with some brilliant artists, which include the hip young composer MIDIval PunditZ from New Delhi to create a specially commissioned new site-specific work at the South Bank Centre. Audiences and participants of workshops will have a rare opportunity to see Angika create Urban Temple in an open, informal environment.

Watch or join the company warm up and start the day with a Bharata Natyam technique class. Open to experienced Bharata Natyam dancers.

THE MAKING OF URBAN TEMPLE CREATIVE REHEARSAL
Open to 13 yrs with a minimum of 1 year's Bharata Natyam training. An exciting chance to participate in a creative process with this leading professional company and perform a site-specific piece at the end of the week. Sign up for the course on Monday (you will need to commit to all five days of the workshops).

Created in 1998, this piece established Angika as one of the most promising South Asian dance companies of the current generation. Original music composed by Shin Parwana (DCS Bhangra Band) and Paul Timothy.
 
6, 7 & 8 AUG BALLROOM PULSE OF TALA
Angika perform the cutting-edge piece Pulse of Tala with specially composed music by Mercury Music Prize-Winner Talvin Singh.

4 AUG VOICE BOX SACRED DANCE IN TEMPLE CITIES - LECTURE
Guest speaker, Dr. Madhuvanti Ghose of Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, will explore and illustrate the traditional relationship of Bharata Natyam to the ancient temples and architecture of South India.
 
5 AUG BALLROOM EXPRESSING YOUR LINES
Open Bharata Natyam workshops 13yrs . Suitable for those with little or no Bharata Natyam experience. The focus is on pure dance technique and anga-shuddha (purity of movement). Have fun learning some of the beautiful geometrical and rhythmical dance aspects of this dynamic form.
 
6 AUG HOTHOUSE LIVING SCULPTURES
Open Bharata Natyam workshops 13yrs . Suitable for those with little or no Bharata Natyam experience. Breathe life into your dance movements and discover what it feels like to move with the power and energy of Nataraja - the Indian god of dance and various other Indian gods and goddesses. The focus is on subtle abhinaya (expression) and skilled use of hand gestures, neck, head and eye movements.
 
7 AUG BALLROOM FIRE A JAATI
Create your own vocal and rhythm orchestra with some TA KI TA's and K I TA TA KA's. Have lots of fun clapping, reciting and playing some intricate and funky Indian rhythms. Open to all ages.
 
8 AUG BALLROOM BURNING QUESTIONS
A facilitated discussion in which Angika will talk about how and why they are successful in developing their Bharata Natyam style and technique without mixing it with other dance forms for contemporary audiences. Hear about the artistic challenges they continue to face in evolving this art form.
 
FRI 8 AUGUST 12PM-1PM BALLROOM VISUAL MUSIC
An exciting opportunity to explore creative digital behaviour with artists from SHAANTI. Open to 13 yrs .
 
FRI 8 AUGUST 5PM-6PM BALLROOM RAGABEATS SPECIAL
DJ set by SHAANTI playing the latest music and sounds which reflect the British Indian Experience. Open to all ages.
