Sampad South Asian Arts

'Vasant', by Sampad, is a weekend bringing you an exciting programme of South Asian music, theatre and dance, showcasing youth, amateur and emerging artists.

Sampad is a dynamic development agency for South Asian Arts based in Birmingham. It plays a significant role regionally, nationally and beyond, in promoting the appreciation and practice of the diverse art forms originating from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Through its work Sampad serves, supports and initiates South Asian Arts in all its forms working with youth, community, education and professional artists.

DANCE

Shakti,a group of British Asian dancers and now a powerful force in the West Midlands, will present a new piece of work. The evening will also include a second new work,created as part of sampad 's continuing professional development programme for young dancers and features Shane Shambu and Kalidas Chandrasegaram.

A triple bill of three short theatre presentations. Filmy Azam: This is a culmination of a film eminiscence project as part of ImagineASIA South Asian Film Festival. Shandani (meaning inquisitive) were established in Birmingham in 1996 through a drama based on the Freedom Fight for Bangladesh during 1971. Shandani were also part of the Birmingham Rep's community project with the Ramayana in 2001.
Kinaetma Theatre Company: An adaptation of the story of Sita from this Wolverhampton based company.

YOUTH DANCE

Sampad's annual youth dance platform is back for the 6th year running. It brings together over 60 dancers from all over the region & beyond. They have all worked with high profile artists and teachers including Chitraleka Bolar, Sonia Sabri and Alison Carmichael and will be presenting work in a variety of South Asian dance forms.

Sampad Sabha. Sam-Yo! CBSO Centre. Photograph by Richard Battye.This month 's celebratory showcase of South Asian classical music is taking place in collaboration with SAA-uk (Leeds). SAAZ are a Hindustani quartet who have been playing classical Indian music together for 4 years. The combination of 2 sitars, santoor and tabla mean that SAAZ have a very unique and distinct sound. This Sabha will also feature classical Indian Ragas by Mohammed Abbas, sitar and tabla, Giuliano Moderalli, guitar, and Olivia Moore, violin. Both groups have studied under the tutelage of Dharambir Singh through Leeds College of Music.
