Watermans continues its ever popular comedy strand with a
night of comedy from Britains top female comedians - Shazia
Mirza and Shappi Khorsandi.
The
first female Muslim stand up in the UK, Shazia Mirza is known for
her distinctive act, which combines deadpan delivery with razor
sharp observations on the world around her. Shazia is a revolutionary
figure because shes a muslim stand up, a job which many frown
upon within the community. However, she has a unique perspective
as a British muslim, with her material crossing both cultures. Shazia
has recently just won the award of Young Achiever of the Year at
the 'The Leadership & Diversity Awards'. She won the 2002 Hackney
Empire Best New Act competition at the London Comedy Festival, and
won the Metro Magazines Peoples Choice Best Comic Award
at the London Comedy Festival 2002.
Shappi
Khorsandi entered the BBC New Comedy Awards 2000 as a dare and ended
up in the final. She tried her luck again at the Hackney Empire
New Act Awards and stormed to the final. She has since made a splash,
not just only on the UK circuit but also Holland, Scandinavia, Iran
and the USA.
Born
in Tehran and raised in London, hugely talented Khorsandi has a
distinct, sassy and sharp act, which she has taken her to all corners
of the globe. She most recently toured the USA where she performed
her hilarious self-penned show How to be Iranian!! to
sell out crowds, receiving critical acclaim, and incorporating sketches
and stand-up based on her experiences growing up as an Iranian in
London. She dishes up a bit of the Ayatollah Khomeini, Thatcher,
some kebabs and fish & chips!
