POWER TO THE PEOPLE - DIABETES DIY
(30 April 2003)

Diabetes UK logoDiabetes UK is today calling on people with diabetes to take action into their own hands to ensure their future health. A report published today highlights the need for the NHS to provide more support to individuals to allow them to take greater responsibility in dealing with the problem.

Diabetes UK is the leading charity working for people with diabetes. The organisation funds research, campaigns and helps people to live with the condition. "Many people with diabetes look after themselves well but 'many people' is not enough - it should be everyone. People must take responsibility, but they cannot do it on their own. Diabetes is serious. If you don't manage it well you are putting yourself at risk of heart disease, blindness and strokes. People need the support of their doctors and nurses and if they are not getting it they should demand it." said Paul Streets, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK.

The report, published one month into the implementation of the Government's flagship National Service Framework for Diabetes, highlights current gaps in the knowledge of people with diabetes. It also looks at the support provided to them.

  • Less than half of those with diabetes realise it can cause heart disease.
  • Only one in three people with Type 2 diabetes take all of their tablets. The more tablets they have to take the less likely they are to take them all.
  • Nearly six out of ten GP practises do not have diabetes clinics and only 10 per cent have diabetes education programmes.

Diabetes UK is calling on the Government and the NHS to provide support and resources locally to ensure people with diabetes are empowered to manage their diabetes. It is also today launching a campaign to highlight the seriousness of diabetes to people with the condition. The hard-hitting campaign is designed to help people help themselves by finding out as much as possible about managing diabetes and what help and support they are entitled to in the changing NHS.
