DIABETES FACT SHEETS LAUNCHED IN SIX ETHNIC LANGUAGES
(5 March 2004)

Insulin injection for diabetes.Diabetes UK today launched free fact sheets and new website pages for people from black and minority ethnic communities. The information is available in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, Cantonese and English. "People from black and minority ethic communities are more likely to have diabetes yet they are less likely to be able to get information about how to deal with it. Producing these fact sheets and putting them in the community will hopefully start to put this problem right." said Suzanne Lucas, Diabetes UK Director of Research.

People of ethnic origin are up to 6 times more likely to develop diabetes. The fact sheets have been produced to provide culturally specific core information on diabetes. The six sheets cover 'What is diabetes?', 'Healthy lifestyle', 'Fasting and diabetes', 'How Diabetes UK can help you', 'Diabetic complications' and 'Hypoglycaemia'.

The fact sheets will be sent to 2000 community and religious organisations, and can be downloaded from the Diabetes UK website at www.diabetes.org.uk or ordered by calling 0800 585 088.

The fact sheets have been funded by FEXCO MT, the UK representative for Western Union Money Transfer, and pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. Jeff Smith, from the Corporate Affairs team at Eli Lilly said, "Lilly is pleased to support this project, which is indicative of Diabetes UK's valued commitment to meet the needs of all patients with diabetes in the UK."

The Diabetes UK Careline, on 0845 120 2960, provides advice and information on diabetes. A translation service for up to 100 languages is available.
