new report by mental health charity Mind reveals the staggering levels
of isolation experienced by people with mental health problems, with
people in Black and minority ethnic communities more isolated than
any other group in society. The report reveals that while 84% of respondents
overall said that they had experienced isolation in one way or another,
this was up to 89% amongst (BME) respondents.

WOMAN TO SPEARHEAD AUTISM PROJECT |

The
National Autistic Society (NAS) is to launch its London Black and
Minority Ethnic Communities (BME) Project during Autism Awareness
Week, 17 - 24 May. The charity has secured funding for three years
from Bridge House Estates to employ Ammara Khan-Haque as Development
Officer (BME communities) in its London Regional Team. Ammara's role
will be to identify how the NAS can make contact with BME community
groups across London to raise awareness of autism and the support
services available.

Trust (NCT). ' Pregnancy and birth - a guide for deaf women' aims
to ensure that pregnancy and birth are easier for thousands of deaf
women throughout the UK.

Treatment Agency, Phoenix House, has launched a new campaign to highlight
the alcohol and drug abuse treatment services available for the UK's
Asian Community. A new leaflet, available in Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati
and Hindi, is also being rolled out. Phoenix
House hopes that the awareness campaign will help to de-stigmatise
substance misuse among Asians.

UK today launched free fact sheets for people from black and minority
ethnic communities. The information is available in Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi,
Bengali, Gujarati, Cantonese and English. "People from black
and minority ethic communities are more likely to have diabetes yet
they are less likely to be able to get information about how to deal
with it." said Suzanne Lucas, Diabetes UK Director of Research.

study funded by Epilepsy Action has revealed that lack of information,
language barriers and stigma are the main areas of concern for people

findings of the study - carried out by the Health Services Research
Unit and lead by Professor John Wright at Bradford Teaching Hospitals
NHS Trust was launched on at a special meeting in Bradford.

EXPERT WARNS ASIANS AGAINST CHEWING PAAN |

Leading
mouth cancer expert Dr Vinod K Joshi is warning Asians, particularly
women, about the dangers of chewing paan. Dr Joshi said, "Watch
your mouth! Mouth cancers have a higher proportion of deaths per number
of cases than breast cancer, cervical cancer or skin melanoma. In
the UK, the mortality rate is just over 50% despite treatment. There
are about 1700 deaths per year in the UK. This is because of late
detection."

Asian women* living in England are more likely to survive breast cancer
than other women, Cancer Research UK scientists revealed today. Researchers
also found that mortality rates in women of South Asian origin with
breast cancer were up to 18 per cent lower than in non-South Asian
women with the disease. The
study, published in today's British Journal of Cancer**, is the first
to examine differences in breast cancer survival between ethnic groups
in Britain.
