UK ASIAN RUGBY INITIATIVE: NEXT STOP INDIA!

Four members of the pioneering Bradford-based South Asian Bulls rugby team are off to India on 21st September to participate in the All-India Games rugby union event. Selectors there will have an eye on choosing the team to represent India in the All-Asia Games to be held in Hong Kong in November 2004.

The South Asia Bulls, a unique rugby league squad comprising players from the different South Asian communities across the UK, was the brainchild of former England rugby league international Ikram Butt as part of a long-running campaign to combat racism, build bridges between Asian communities and provide role models for youths.

Backed by Sporting Equals and the Youth Charter for Sport, Culture and the Arts (YCSCA) and sponsored by the Asian Jewel Awards, the project has been very successful over the summer and the plan is now to formalize an Anglo-Asian youth initiative with the help of the YCSCA.

Ikram Butt says: “The trip to India is part of our ongoing efforts to promote social and cultural cohesion and religious tolerance, and we’re hoping to forge further meaningful partnerships during our visit.”
