ASIANS URGED TO NOMINATE FOR £20,000 BEACON AWARD
(9 July 2003)

Emily Stonor, CEO of Beacon and Ram Gidoomal of the South Asian Development Partnership urge Asians to nominate for the £20,000 Beacon Award 2003.The South Asian Development Partnership (SADP) has lent its support to Beacon, a new national scheme that aims to raise the profile of giving and philanthropy in the UK. SADP is keen to ensure that ethnic minority communities take part in nominating worthy recipients for the Beacon Prize 2003 that awards the winner £20,000 to be given a charity/charities of their choice. The deadline for nominations is 15th July 2003 and winners can be nominated by charities and the general public.

South Asian businessman, Ram Gidoomal CBE, has been involved in the Beacon project as both an advisor and a Judge of the Beacon Prize. He commented on the scheme, saying; "Beacon is a wonderful project and I am delighted to be involved. There are so many people in our communities doing outstanding work. These people deserve recognition and we can all learn from sharing in their success stories. Make sure you nominate the people that really make a difference in your community."

ABOUT THE BEACON FELLOWSHIP

The Beacon Fellowship Charitable Trust (Beacon) seeks to promote an improved culture of giving, in which it is natural for those who are best able to contribute to charitable and social causes, to use their time, energy, ability and resources for the public good.

The Beacon Prize 2003 is an annual award scheme designed to recognise and showcase individuals who made exceptional contributions to charitable or social causes. The winners are likely to have helped to create or transform a charity, project or cause by giving money, either personally or through a grant-making trust or to have provided leadership, creative ideas, skills or time without personal reward.

The six nomination categories for the Beacon Prize are:

  • The Beacon Prize for Leadership
  • The Beacon Prize for Start Ups
  • The Beacon Prize for Creative Giving
  • The Beacon Prize for Courage
  • The Beacon Prize for Young Philanthropist
  • The Beacon Prize for Lifetime Contribution

All nominations will initially be assess by Beacon, and a shortlist drawn up, for each prize category. The final selection will be made by an independent panel of judges. In awarding the Beacon Prizes the judges will focus on the impact the nominees' contributions have made. This year's judges include:

Lord Puttnam of Queensgate, CBE
Jane Tewson, CBE
Maggie Semple, OBE
Ram Gidoomal, CBE
Rt. Hon the Lord Deedes, KBE, MC, DL
Sir Anthony Kenny
David Charters JP, Chair of the Judging Panel.

Nominations for the Beacon Prize 2003 must be received by the 15th July, 2003. Prize winners will be contacted in October and the Beacon Prize will be awarded in early 2004. Charities, voluntary and community organisation and the general public may nominate an individual for a prize by completing a nomination form.
