MUSLIM YOUTH HELPLINE WINS GOOD CITIZENSHIP AWARD

The Muslim Youth Helpline, based in Wembley were honoured with a Philip Lawrence award for outstanding achievement in good citizenship on Tuesday 9 December 2003. The awards ceremony took place ain the presence of the Mayor of Brent, Councillor Peter Lemmon, Rt. Hon Paul Boateng, MP for Brent South and the Duchess of Kent.

The Muslim Helpline, is a service that offers Muslim young people a forum to share problems, anxieties and get advice. A team of fully trained volunteers run the helpline and between them they can speak over ten different languages which means they are able to offer advice and a listening ear to the 40 per cent of calls that come from refugee communities, whose first language is not English.

The Mayor of Brent said: "These awards, although coming to being through tragic circumstances, are a fantastic way of rewarding young people and their organisations that work hard for the benefit of the community. The Muslim Youth Helpline is a great example of this providing advice, information and time to listen, to those that call it in times of need."
