Receiving her award, the outspoken urban artist, aka Niomi McLean-Daley said: “I'm really happy that I’ve won this award. CRE Chair, Trevor Phillips, said “The CRE’s Race in the Media Awards were established in 1992 at a time when whole communities were being left out of the national portrait. Eleven years on, there is no doubt that ethnic minorities are increasingly better reflected on the front page and the small screen. Our next task is to ensure that the industry’s top dogs and decision-makers also mirror the diverse make-up of society.

The results were announced at a gala luncheon at the Savoy Hotel in London attended by judges, nominees and a host of celebrities and leading players in the UK media. Channel 4 News anchorman, Jon Snow, and Sky News presenter, Lisa Aziz, hosted the awards.

ABOUT RIMA

RIMA is an established part of the media landscape attracting hundreds of entries from television, radio, advertising, print and online. Created by the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in 1992 to encourage informed coverage of race relations, diversity and multiculturalism, RIMA is self-supporting with extensive sponsorship. The awards are independently judged by celebrities and specialists from throughout the media industry. Celebrity judges attending this year’s awards included the journalists Moira Stuart, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Claire Rayner; the actors Nichola McAuliffe and David Yip; the broadcaster Floella Benjamin and the ice skater Robin Cousins.

ABOUT THE CRE

The Race Relations Act makes it unlawful to discriminate against anyone on grounds of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origins. The Commission for Racial Equality was established under the Act to work for the elimination of discrimination, the promotion of equality of opportunity and good race relations generally.

The Commission can advise or assist people with cases before courts and employment tribunals and can conduct its own investigations when it has grounds to believe discrimination may be taking place.
