It is hard to believe that brassiere design has not changed for nearly a century since the breast supporter was first introduced in the late nineteenth century.

Charnos, makers of lingerie, plan to change all that with the launch of the 'Bioform' bra which features a revolutionary, mould-breaking new design by Seymour Powell. Dubbed as the ultimate innovation for women with larger busts it took two men, both conventionally taught, to design and develop the Bioform bra.

Instead of an under-wire it contains a moulded wing made from reinforced polypropylene all housed within a body-forming Elastomer® cup. "The bottom half contains a plastic spoon bit" gushed the enthusiastic lingerie saleswoman. The bra claims to offer an impressive uplift without pinching under the armpit or leaving indents on your rib cage unlike conventional under-wired versions.

For those lacking in the cup size department there is some good news too - the design of the bra is such that I managed to drop down one size and increase by one cup size and still found it a comfortable fit - thinner and with a larger bust, it must be truly miraculous!

The Bioform bra is available in white and black in cup sizes B-G (Sizes 30-42). Made of 39% polyamide, 34% polyester, 15% viscose and 12% Elastane® it is machine washable at 40 degrees.

The snazzy package explains the design of the bra as thus "A sculptured 3-dimensional under cup support that gently holds and shapes to give a figure flattering profile." Adding to Nature's Assets

Of course, adding to nature's assets is not news. Along with the Charnos launch comes news of the Ultimo® bra as worn by Julia Roberts in the film 'Erin Brokovich'.

Another manufacturer, Panache, produces the 'Atlantis' liquid-filled lace balconnet bra. It guarantees to increase your bust size by a full cup size. Made form 68% nylon, 23% cotton, 9% Elastane® the bottom half of the cup is literally filled with liquid.

Instructions do ask that you only hand wash the bra in cold water and avoid ironing, tumble drying, extreme heat and sharp objects - presumably to avoid embarrassing deflating situations.

Unlike sports bras that are designed for robustness, these bust-enhancing bras are strictly for pleasure. One revolution I would like is to how to avoid all white bras reverting to a sludgy grey colour after a few short washes!
