An Indian Summer
by Lopa Patel (July 2000)

If you feel you that concept of "an Indian summer" resides only in the over active imagination of high street retailers, you'd be dead right. Patterns and designs so long beloved by Indian Clothing designers have appeared everywhere from Marks & Spencer, Next and Monsoon to designers like Karen Millen. Children are the luckiest. Featured below are some terrific items we found in two high street stores: Next and Marks & Spencer.

What's Next?

My particular favourites are girl's dresses in Next plc. Their lime green and pastel blue sleeveless embroidered dress in 100% cotton is superb. Made in India, I think it shows the significant improvement of clothing manufactured there in recent years. With buttons down the back, it is beautifully stitched with sun motifs and keri (mango) shapes. Machine washable at 40 degrees, a cool iron will help restore the three fluorescent lime green flowers on the front. It costs £14.99 (M20195306).

There is also a lovely yellow woven two-piece (sleeveless dress and frilly knickers). Beautifully embroidered with pink, blue and white flowers it is made in India from 100% cotton. The knickers feature an elastic waist. The set costs £15.99 (M96380307).

Even more Keri's are in evidence other stores!

Sparks of creativity gains top Marks!

Marks & Spencer currently have a wonderful set of clothing available: comprising of a burnt orange skirt-cum-trouser, a white T-shirt, a burnt orange sleeveless vest, a blue skirt with orange embroidery, an orange handbag and even flip flops to match!

The orange skirt-cum-trouser seems to be "painted" with a flower & keri design. I am sure there is a proper technical term for the type of print; suffice to say it leaves a waxy painted image on the cloth. Featuring an elastic waist, the skirt wraps around the trouser and is tied with ribbons at one end. Made in Sri Lanka it is 98% cotton and 2% Elastane®. Like most of Marks & Spencer clothing it can be washed in the machine at 50 degrees, but iron only on the inside. Costing £15.00 (T74/00222/4939) it is very trendy yet practical outfit.

To accompany the skirt-cum-trouser is a simple white T-shirt embroidered with mirror work and keri shapes. Also made in Sri Lanka from 94% cotton and 6% Elastane® it can be washed in the machine at a cooler 40 degrees. Obviously ironing it inside out will preserve the mirror work. At only £8 (T74/0022/7621) it is a summer essential.

Another key item is their burnt Orange sleeveless vest, similarly appearing to be "painted" with a flower and keri design. Made in the UK it is 94% cotton, 6% Elastane® and machine washable at 40 degrees. Priced at £6 (T74/0223/7620) it forms a good combination with matching trousers or an even better contrast with the blue skirt.

Made in Morocco, the blue skirt has a pretty orange & gold embroidered border not unlike many saris. It wraps around and ties on one side with ribbons, although it also has an elastic waist as a more practical "back up"! It costs £12 (T74/02832/0440)

If you cannot get your kids out of jeans, then Marks & Spencer have the answer - a denim peddle-pusher. Made from "elasticised" denim (89% cotton, 9%polyamide & 2% Elastane®) the jeans feature the same orange keri-embroidered border and turquoise tassels. The peddle-pushers cost £13 (T74/02832/9457)

By buying all three sets you get a combination of five interchangeable outfits, so what better to complement that than a matching orange hand bag for all would be "IT" girls. Available only in one size, the round bag has a removable rope handle secured to the base with 'pop' button. On the front is the same flower & keri design and the bag has a blue lining. It costs £10 (T74/02742/5204)

To finish the ensemble, Marks & Spencer have a range of footwear. There are orange flip-flops featuring the keri design and can be purchased for £10 in various sizes (T05/02872/0713). They are made in Vietnam.

If that is not sufficient, accessories such as a bracelet & pierced earrings in a red 'keri' shape cost £8 (02606132T74). Made in China, these are hypoallergenic for sensitive skin. Also available are hairpins in the same range priced at £4 (03600849T74).

Almost enough to make you wish you were young again!

Marks & Spencer clothing can be purchased from their major high street stores.
