Microfinance, the unique
system of providing money to poor or low-income
groups of people has lifted millions out of poverty.
Or has it? Has it allowed entrepreneurship to
flourish or caused a loan and debt culture amongst
the poorest and most vulnerable people in the
world? The Asian Foundation for Philanthropy (AFFP)
is hosting a special seminar on the issue on 25th
August 2010 at The Financial Services Authority
(FSA) in London.
Leading the debate will be
AFP returned volunteer Priya Lukka, who will share
her experiences of working with slum communities
in Gujarat. Also hear of the experiences from
other panel members in Malawi, and Glasgow, where
a new microfinance project is about to begin.
Guest speakers for
this event are Mark Tennant (Chair, Scottish Financial
Enterprise), Olly Donnelly, (Director, Shivia
Microfinance) and Bala Thakrar (Director, Asian
Foundation for Philanthropy)
