Is
it just me, or was the publication of The Sunday Times
Rich List a bit of a damp squib last week? I rushed
out at midday expecting to see empty racks at the
newsagents...when lo & behold, there were stacks
of it lying around. Of
course, others might be more interested in the list
of "hotties" up for the Asian Women of Achievement
Awards later this month!

Asian
Women of Achievement Awards 2008 Shortlist Announced
The
shortlist has been announced for the Asian Women
of Achievement Awards 2008. Asian women in line
for the coveted awards range from entrepreneur
Hasfa Abubacker, who has generated a turnover
of £8.5m in just four years for Pitchwell,
a company she started in the spare room of her
flat, through to journalist Navdip Dhariwal, and
Kiss Radio's DJ Neev (pictured).

Bangladeshi visits UK's carbon-neutral housing project
Yesterday,
Khodeza Rume, Oxfam Programme Manager from Bangladesh,
visited BedZed, the UKs largest carbon-neutral housing
development, to warn of increased risks of natural disasters
and see how people in the South East are getting involved
in the fight against climate change. Climate change is
already having a major effect on Bangladesh.

Monty
launches volunteering scheme specifically for UK Indians
The UKs first volunteering scheme to target the
Indian diaspora was launched today in North West London
with the support of cricketing hero Monty Panesar. Sewa
Volunteers is a flagship initiative of British charity
- Sewa International, that seeks to make it easier for
volunteers to find local groups that can make good use
of their time, skills, and experiences.

Nazia
Hassan Foundation Birthday Celebration 2008
The Nazia Hassan Foundation, set up in memory of
the famous songstress, organised a seminar to celebrate
her birthday on Thursday 24th April 2008. The event was
hosted by Lord Ahmed of Rotherham at the House of Lords
- Lord Herman Ouseley gave the keynote address followed
by a poem by Reginald Massey in honour of Nazia. Sabih
Behzad anchored the seminar with a vote of thanks given
by Zahra Hassan.

Rich List: Mittal tops Britain's rich list again, Hindujas
are fourth
Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Niwas Mittal has once again
topped the Sunday Times Rich List - the definitive rundown
of Britain's wealthiest people. Mittal and the Hinduja
brothers Srichand and Gopichand are the two Indian business
conglomerates that dominated the list for 2008 in the
midst of a global credit crunch.

Prime
Minister attends Labour Friends of India Annual Luncheon
2008
The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown presented Lord Neil
Kinnock with the Fenner Brockway Medal for the services
of the British Council in India at the Labour Friends
of India Annual Luncheon, on Tuesday 22 April
2008 in London. The Prime Minister, in his speech said
"I want India and Britain to work in even closer
relationships".
