REDHOTCURRY.COM - A CELEBRATION OF ASIAN LIFE IN THE UK

Issue 21, Saturday 30th August 2003

Greetings Curry Lovers!

I have a real end of Summer feeling now.....probably because it is the end of August and it has turned a little chilly. The little horrors are back at school soon and we are left with only a fading tan and warm memories to keep us going for the next few months. Well thank goodness for curry! Brick Lane, London's curry Mecca plays host to an International Curry Festival from 7 - 21 September 2003. Meanwhile on the other side of town, or more accurately in Chelsea, Mujibur Rahman has opened a new restaurant called 'Sticklebackpink' to add to the UK's growing number of curry restaurants.

Of course, one of the best things about the end of Summer is the grape harvest which produces one of my favourite tipples - wine. Wine specialist, Peter May has reviewed a number of wines that claim to be an ideal accompaniment to curry and I've taken a closer look at a soon-to-launched range. We'd be spoil sports if we didn't share, so we've got six bottles of this new drinkable wine to give away in our competition this time (see details below).

WINE WITH CURRY? new icon WHINE ABOUT WINE
Glass of Wine. What to drink with Indian meals is the question and too frequently beer is the answer, which is understandable when you read the lacklustre wine lists featuring once fashionable names like 'Piersporter' and 'Liebfraumilch' presented by many restaurants. read more read more Glass of wine being poured.Up to now it has been assumed that Asian ladies are too shy to consume wine in public or that there aren't any suitable wines for curry. The end of Summer also signals the start of a frenetic Autumn term of activity. Fresh from the Edinburgh Festival, 'Out of Bounds' by Rajesh Gopie is a tale about South African Indians growing up during and after Apartheid. Apart from rave reviews at the festival, it is the only play to be specifically requested by Nelson Mandela. 'Strictly Dandia' by the Tamasha Theatre group also has its final performance at the Edinburgh International Festival tonight. The rest of us will just have to wait until early 2004 before we can see this take on the competitive and brutal world of Navratri where regional and caste rivalries abound! Honey Kalaria's boundless energy may have failed to secure her the World Dandia record, but hasn't stopped her opening more dance classes, this time in Upton Park.

Rarely does a newsletter go by without some mention of a Rishi Rich Project venture. Although it seems like 'Dance With You' (Nachna Tere Naal) has been around for months (personally I've probably heard it about a hundred times!) it is only released as a single on September 8th. 'Indiamond' a Parisian/Indian venture in classical Indian/electronic dance music is launched on 15th September. This mix of classical and dance music theme continues on 17 October when The Angel Brothers perform 'From Punjab to Pit Top' at The Bull Theatre in Barnet.

If your musical tastes run into the eclectic, then the Bauls of Bengal UK Tour from 7 - 11 October, entitled 'Music of the Mystics' will appeal.

Returning to the Bollywood theme, Salman Khan makes a comeback in 'Tere Naam' which is running in cinemas now. Meanwhile a documentary film called 'Mistaken Identity: Sikhs in America' is seeking tie-up screenings in the UK.

We are guaranteed great television viewing this Autumn. Channel 4 has commissioned 'Second Generation' starring Christopher Simpson and Parminder Nagra, which is currently in production. It promises to be a vivid romance! Meanwhile the BBC 'Big Dreams' season looks at Asian Life in Britain and the crossover between the two cultures. My favourite of the season will undoubtedly be 'The Joy of Curry' which charts the rise and rise of the nation's favourite dish.

Another kind of dish - DISH ASIA - has recently launched six new satellite channels into the UK so we can now enjoy as much variety in programming as we do with curry. And curry remains in my dreams when recalling Cafe Lazeez's truly enjoyable summer soiree this year. Sadly only the pictures remain!
