Britain's
First Black CEO of a FTSE 100 Company |
Financial
company, Prudential plc today announced that
Tidjane Thiam, its Chief Financial Officer,
will become Group Chief Executive with effect
from 1st October 2009. Thiam becomes the first
black CEO of a FTSE 100 Company in the UK.
A French national, Tidjane began his professional
career with McKinsey & Company, working
in both Paris and London, from 1986 to 1994,
serving insurance companies and banks.

the current economic downturn and increasing
the number of international students studying
in London by nearly 3,000. In 2007/8, 93,000
overseas students, from over 200 countries,
chose the excellence that London s higher
education sector offers.

meets West for final of the Global Enterprise
Challenge

Thirty
young people from Afghanistan, Bangladesh,
Kazakhstan, Nepal, Pakistan and Uzbekistan
met in London from 9 - 11 March, 2009 to take
part in the final of an international enterprise
challenge to mark the first-ever Global Entrepreneurship
Week last November. The initiative, for 17
to 21-year-olds, was a partnership between
the British Council and the UKs Make
Your Mark enterprise campaign.

biggest immigration removal centre opens |
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith opened a new immigration
removal centre near Gatwick today. The new
426-bed detention centre will help ensure
the UK Border Agency can continue to remove
record numbers of foreign lawbreakers from
the UK. Last year over 66,000 people were
removed from the UK. This includes 5,395 foreign
criminals - made up of 50 killers, 200 sex
offenders and 1,500 drug dealers.

row has broken out at Queen Mary University,
London about the use of its multi-faith centre.
The National Hindu Students Forum (UK) claims
that members of the Queen Marys Islamic
Society have been physically preventing students
of the Hindu society from offering prayers
at the multi-faith centre.
