Editorial: Asian heroines
with feet of clay. Or is it just a case of
collective amnesia? |
OK
this week I am really going to cause
trouble. It seems notable Asians
when raised to high office seem
to get collective amnesia about
who they are, whom they represent
and what is expected of them. Baroness
Pola Uddin of Bethnal Green has
become embroiled in a scandal over
claiming £100K in expenses
from the House of Lords. The Baroness
claims "I
do not believe that I have done
anything wrong or breached any House
of Lords rules."
Well,
Pola, in case your own moral yardstick
has been stolen by someone, let
me say "this is WRONG. Just
because you can claim £100K
in expenses, doesn't mean that you
should". Given that only last
year you were exhorting young Asian
women into thankless, low-paid,
"do your civic duty" roles
in local councils....this new revelation
has harmed the faith we put in you
as our role model. The public knows
that nothing will happen. The House
of Lords will conduct a review,
suggest amendments to the rules
that will be implemented some years
from now, you will keep your title
Baroness of Bethnal Green, you'll
keep your role and life will go
on until the next election. No harm
done, right?
Well consider why more young, disadvantaged,
ethnic and female candidates are
not putting themselves forward to
join the political arena. It isn't
just journalists who become cynical
- swathes of your voters are disillusioned
with the endless political scandals
which read more like a torrid novel
from Jeffrey Archer (ex-con and
still a Lord)!
Across
the pond, Canadian MP Ruby Dhalla,
voted third in odious Maxim Magazine's
"hottest women politicians
of the world" poll has just
resigned her role
as critic for youth and multiculturalism
for the opposition Liberal Party.
It seems, Ms Dhalla cannot decide
whether she is the sexy Bollywood
babe, Sikh Angelina Jolie look-alike
hottie or serious politician....answers
on an email please.
