Editorial: Gorgeousness

 Someone
recently asked me why I spend so much
time writing about women and Asian
women in particular. Well the answer
is elementary, my website stats tell

Indian biodiversity.

Karia - Queen of Startups |
 How
many technology startups have you been involved
with? One, maybe two? How about 600, in just
six months! This is the astonishing feat that
Asian woman Bindi Karia, VC/Emerging Business
lead for Microsoft UK, has achieved since
the launch of the company's UK BizSpark program
in 2008. Karia attributes her success to being
"in the right place at the right time".

Ceiling a Distraction: It should be about
the Glass Ladder |
 The
lack of women on the boards of Britain's top
companies has nothing to do with the 'glass
ceiling' but because there is a shortage of
women ready to step up to the board table
says Kathleen O'Donovan, co-founder of Bird
& Co, an agency that trains women for
the boardroom. Bird said: "There have
been too many reports about glass ceilings
which lament the lack of women on boards but
provide no answers".

Jolie |
| According
to Hollywood director Rob Cohen, whose credits
include ‘The Witches of Eastwick’
and ‘The Fast and the Furious’,
Bollywood actress “Deepika Padukone is
more beautiful than Angelina Jolie".
The renowned director has also indicated that
he is interested in casting Deepika for his
next film project. Graceful, classic and radiant,
Deepika Padukone shot to fame in Farah Khan's
2007 blockbuster 'Om Shanti Om'.

invited for £1.5million Social Leadership
Programme |
 The
Clore Social Leadership Programme, established
in 2008 by the Clore Duffield Foundation as
a new initiative to develop emerging talent
in the third sector, is inviting applications
for its first group of Fellowships with a
bursary of up to £20,000 each. Fifteen
Fellowships, to be announced in October 2009,
will be awarded.

 Mohammed
Hanif's 'A Case of Exploding Mangoes', an
edgy and provocative novel has won the Commonwealth
Writers' 'Best First Book Prize' 2009, while
Pakistan has its first ever winner in the
debut fiction category. The overall winners
of the 2009 Commonwealth Writers' Prize were
announced on Saturday 16 May 2009 in New Zealand.
