Editorial: Why are Indians so earnest?

Mumbai Calling Series 1Oscar Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest', is a comedy masterpiece about two flamboyant bachelors who secretly lead double lives. Using aliases and false alibis, the pair woo respectable ladies by day and cavort in music halls at night. As I sat through an hour long session with members of the CII-Yi London delegation, I wondered if they would be carousing in the music halls of London later, because, boy......the going was "heavy weather"! Why are Indians so earnest?

Still if you fancy some real tomfoolery set in an Indian call centre, buy Sanjeev Bhaskar & Nitin Ganatra's new series 'Mumbai Calling' which is out on DVD on 20 July. It's absolutely hilarious. Hanif Kureishi's dark wit is also out on display in his new play 'The Black Album' which starts at the National Theatre on 14 July 2009.
