From Narcissus to Pippy

Recently, a friend jokingly told me (at least I assumed he was joking) that he finds my weekly newsletter vastly amusing as the topics veer from the deep and meaningful to the shallow and trivial.

The irony, of course, is that my musings fulfil their primary purpose -which is to be READ. After all, how else would he know that I try and alleviate poverty, bring about World Peace and try and get a few young people on the path to gainful work from week to week?

Lost among the criticism about my trivialisation of issues is that people do need to be engaged. If that happens because I rant on women's rights one minute and then about my shoes and clothes the next minute...so be it.

Paradoxically, women multi-task topics in their heads all the time. My view is that if we can "bring home" issues into our own humble spheres, perhaps they loose a little of their sheer magnitude and scariness and help us actually do something to make a difference.

Anyway, said friend was implying that my musings were narcissistic in their grandiose nature - well Narcissus spent all his time gazing at his own reflection and become a pond flower while grandiosity in thought is perhaps no bad thing.

Even better is a depiction of a cartoon Pippi Longstocking that another friend did of me some months ago. Wikipedia says that the fictional Pippi "usually reserves her worst behavior for the most pompous and condescending of adults". How appropriate!
