'The Idea of India' in 21st Century Britain.

Having just read Professor Sunil Khilnani's 'The Idea of India', I couldn't help wishing for a sequel to his 1997 book that explores India's democracy, economy, cities and identity from Independence in 1947 to end of the twentieth century.

How fast things have changed in the 21st century. The last eleven years have seen the ascent of India in all spheres of life as my stories this week illustrate. Indian businessman Dr Rahul Nanda won an accolade as an 'International Business Leader' at the Asian Who's Who awards this week; Cyrus Mistry was appointed as a successor to Ratan Tata at the helm of Tata Sons - noteworthy, particularly, as Tata is one of the UK's larger employers. And, of course, this week saw the £3.5 million endowment of the Avantha Chair at the newly formed King's India Institute in London. The Institute will provide postgraduate training on contemporary India.

In the UK, our love affair with Bollywood dance continues with Akshay Kumar's 'Desi Boyz' on release from today and May 2012 sees a new Bollywood Musical 'Wah! Wah! Girls' by acclaimed playwright Tanika Gupta.

Releasing next week is 'Bombay Baby', a debut novel by Leela Soma. But, in case you thought I'd reverted back to Indianess over South Asianess, rest easy, there are two current photo exhibitions to set me straight.

'Project Mina' is the result of a 3 year study of the life chances of Bangladeshi women and 'Making Britain' is a new exhibition at the National Media Museum about the South Asian success story in the UK.
