Best Malaysian eaterie was won by The Satay House, London W2The Federation of Bangladeshi Caterers UK highlighted the achievements of Britain's Asian catering trade by hosting the inaugural Asian Curry Awards, held on Sunday 16th October 2011 at The Lancaster Hotel in London. The British Bangladeshi-dominated curry industry contributes approximately £4.5 billion to the British economy and employs about 100,000 people in this sector. Presented by Sky News broadcaster and presenter Lukwesa Burak, the event was attended by hundreds of leading restaurateurs and business owners, including: Richard, Earl of Bradford (Chairman of the Restaurant Association), Lord Sheikh (Chairman of Conservatives Muslim Forum), Rt Hon Simon Huges MP (Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats), Rt Hon Tom Brake MP, Anne Main MP, Rushanara Ali MP, His Excellency Dr Sayeedur Rahman Khan (High Commissioner for Bangladesh), Mr Wan Zeidi Wan Abdullah (Deputy High Commissioner for Malaysia), Mr Zhao Lei (First Secretary & Consul – Embassy of the People’s Republic of China), John Walker (Chairman of FSB), Thomas Chan (Chairman of Chinese Take Away Association), Teddy Chan (Chairman Of Malaysian Restaurant Association) and Raja Badrul Nijan (Malaysia Trade Commissioner).


Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg a supporter of The Federation of Bangladeshi Caterers, sent a message saying, “the FoBC gala dinner is a fitting way to celebrate and promote the success of the UK curry industry. It helps to recognise the excellence of some of the UK’s favourite restaurants and takeaways and the outstanding contribution of key figures in the sector to the UK economy and the UK culinary experience! This occasion rightly recognises not only the important of the Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani sector but also Chinese, Malaysian and Thai catering communities whose contribution is also outstanding.”

Additional awards were given to Veerendra Rishi, Relationship Manager at Kingfisher, Teddy Chen, Chairman of the Malaysian Restaurant Association, and the late Yousef Choudry, writer and influential member of the Bangladeshi catering community. A Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Mr Saad Ghazi who, alongside other professional successes in the catering industry established the Asad Ghazi Foundation – a charity that helps the underprivileged, the needy and the orphans of Bangladesh.

The organisation was formed to promote and safeguard the interest of the catering industry in Britain.
