MUSLIM
ARTS FESTIVAL 2006
16 July - 8 August 2006
The
North East of England will be treated to an array of Eastern music,
drama and poetry when the Pakistan Cultural Society (PCS) celebrates
the Muslim Arts Festival 2006. The events will take place between
five venues over 3-weeks: 16 July 8 August and include Abida
Parveen in concert, Arts and Islam - A Cultural Seminar Day &
Exhibition, Qawwali Performance by Samsalamat; Mushira (Urdu Poetry)
and the superb BJS Qawwal (Bakhshi Javed Salamat) at an outdoor
traditional Pakistani Qawwali concert.
The
PCS Muslim Arts Festival aims to promote the different art forms
that influence various Islamic beliefs that are highlighted within
global culture. The event is based on the interpretation of Islamic
arts with the content heavily drawing from historical values. "World
culture is something the PCS takes very seriously, we aim to provide
people with the opportunity to enjoy some of the best South Asian
performers and at the same time try to widen the potential to generate
new audiences in our attempts to bridge the cultural divide,"
said Sajjad Shah, Chairman of the PCS.

Bakhshi Javed Salamat (BJS) has teamed up with UK samba band
Sambangra, to deliver an electrifying performance under the
name Samsalamat. When Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died in
1997, the art of Sufi Qawwali, took a huge body blow, but
there is no doubt that Bakhshi Javed Salamat carries the art
of Qawwali forward

Ajoka Theatre - a theatre for social change: Ajoka has been
part of the struggle for a secular, democratic just, humane
and egalitarian Pakistan for the last 21 years. Few cultural
institutions have been able to thrive, even survive, in the
climate of hostility and apathy towards performing arts that
has existed in Pakistan. Ajoka is an exception. Set up by
a small group of cultural activists in 1983, during General
Zia-ul-Haqs politically and culturally repressive regime,
Ajoka has struggled with determination against very heavy
odds.
