'RESPECT'
ANTI-RACISM FESTIVAL
12- 19 July 2003
This
year's Mayor's 'Respect' free anti-racism festival finale takes
place at the Greenwich Dome on Saturday 19 July and will be dedicated
to Stephen Lawrence. 'Respect' will be London's biggest music event
this summer and will round off 'Respect' week which runs from July
12-19.
Last
year's festival was attended by more than 85,000 people and headlined
by e la Soul, with other performers including Damage, Tony Allen,
Blak Twang and DJ Ritu & Sister India.
The
Mayor's respect week profiles events celebrating London's Asian
communities and that are taking place in locations across the Capital
in boroughs, arts and cultural centres, museums and galleries. There
are a wide-range of indoor and out door activities for all ages.
Many events are free and are open to all. Check with individual

London Calling: Making History
From the days of slavery to the rappers and street poets of today,
this special event explores life in London for Black and Asian people
from the seventeenth century. Writers and poets have always played
a significant role in how chronicling the experiences of a society.
Join dub-poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, writer and broadcaster Sukhdev
Sandu, and writer and historian SI. Martin for this event inspired
by Sukhdev Sandu's new book 'London Calling'. The evening of discussion
and readings will not only provide an overview of the early history
of black and Asian writing, but will be an opportunity to hear from
one of Britain's most acclaimed poets.
