Sandstorm
is based on actual events and tells the story of a woman trying

Devi and her husband Sohan are at the bottom of the caste system

women. The village elders who are part of a higher caste do not
approve and visciously attack them. Banned in India because of its
political content, the film is a considerable achievement, tackling
major social issues such as gender, caste and the relevance of tradition
in the modern world.
The
screening will be followed by a questions & answers session
with Harvinder Nath and Pushpinder Chowdhry, directors of the 'Tongues
of Fire' festival. 'Tongues on Fire' is a UK wide annual film festival
celebrating the achievements of Asian women in cinema. It was established
in 1999 to provide a fresh perspective on the contributions of Asian
women in the film industry. The festival highlights the great diversity
of talent through film screenings, debates and interviews and demonstrates
the importance of work produced by Asian women in Britain and the
wider Asian community. Harrow Arts Centre is delighted to be taking
part.
