JEWEL THIEF (1967)
Dir: Vijay Anand
Music: S.D. Burman
Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri
Cast: Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Vyjayanthimala, Tanuja, Helen

Jewel ThiefThe Navketan banner is famous in India for its huge variety of movies, a prolific production house set up in 1949 by three brothers: Chetan, Dev and Vijay Anand. Eldest brother Chetan was a screen and theatre director, middle brother Dev one of the most popular stars of 1950s and the youngest brother is the hugely talented director and screenplay writer Vijay (affectionately known as "Goldie").

Jewel Thief, starring Dev Anand and Vyjayanthimala, is a crazy crime story with extraordinary sets, gadgets and gizmos, brilliant musical numbers and exotic locations - a film that makes one wonder if the creators of the Austin Powers movies weren't inspired by this sumptuous "buffet of surprises" (as the Indian press described this cult film). The wildly improbable plot has a police commissioner's son (Dev Anand) finding himself mistaken for Amar, a famous jewel thief. The plot twists and turns literally around the one distinguishing feature of the famous robber: his sixth toe! The end resolution isn't the point of the movie, it's the amazing journey of colour, outlandish costumes and true Bollywood style that keeps the fans gripped, with famous dancer Helen adding spice to this cult film.

Vyjayanthimala was cast because of her impressive dancing talent. Watch out for her most famous dance/song 'Honton pe aisi baath' which proves once again that Bollywood's greatest strength lies in its music.
