In this delightful film about childhood and social awareness, ten-year-old Joseph is sent away from his childhood village to attend boarding school. At first, Joseph does not fit in and, being poor, goes hungry. Gradually, however, he befriends Tom Chacha, an eccentric cook, and is accepted by the other boys. Joseph learns to look beyond his own problems when he meets Sandu, a far poorer and hungrier Siddi (or black) boy. Shocked by the desperate poverty in which Sandu's family lives, Joseph courts trouble by stealing food from school for Sandu. My Little Devil features performances by internationally acclaimed actor Om Puri and Pooja Batra, one of India's rising stars. Told from a child's point of view, Gopi Desai's wise film sheds light on the condition of India's black minority and holds lessons for us all - right up to the surprise at the end of the credits.
