Set in the background of the music industry, 'Shakalaka Boom Boom' is a story of the crown of the established superstar (Bobby Deol) being threatened by a young pretender (Upen Patel) whose talent, drive and ambition are a reflection of the qualities displayed by the older star when he was young. It is a story of the right of passage of the younger singer as he grows up in the dog-eat-dog world of the music industry and his story and that of Shakalaka Boom Boom is one which people of all ages can relate to and probably have experienced at one point in their lives.

The star of the film is Bobby Deol but being the visionary that he is, Suneel Darshan has foregone the temptation of the safe option of using established superstar actors and has instead opted for the young star cast of Upen Patel, Celina Jaitley and Kangana Ranault who, between the three of them have an impressive pedigree of critically acclaimed performances.

Former top model, Upen Patel stars in Shakalaka Boom Boom in what is his first major role in a Bollywood movie and in many ways his character in the movie symbolises Upen's own meteoric rise in the entertainment world. A few years ago, Upen was just an ordinary lad from London who was discovered and went to India to forge a top modelling career. Now, his impressive debut full performance in Shakalaka Boom Boom promises to set this young pretender firmly on the fast track to mega stardom and he is now an inspiration to all non-Indian actors who wish to break into Bollywood.
