Christie's sale of contemporary Indian art nets £4.3 million
9th June 2011

Untitled, Figure on a Rickshaw by Tyeb MehtaChristie’s sale of South Asian Modern & Contemporary Art on Thursday 9th June 2011 realised £4,315,650 with the top lot being an Untitled work (Figure on Rickshaw) by Tyeb Mehta (1925-2009) which fetched £1,973,250 setting a new world auction record for the artist. The sale presented a strong array of works by the celebrated masters of the Progressive Artists Group, through to the biggest names in Indian and Pakistani contemporary art, and examples by emerging artists who are offered at auction for the first time.

Hugo Weihe, Christie’s International Director of Asian Art and Yamini Mehta, Head of Sale: “This sale marks a historic day in the South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art market with the passing of M.F. Husain. The auction featured two lots by the artist, both of which were well received; a fitting tribute to this great master. We are thrilled to have established a new world auction record for Tyeb Mehta, with ‘Untitled (Figure on Rickshaw)’ selling for £1,973,250/$3,240,076 to a new European collector in the field. This painting surpassed the previous record only recently set at Christie’s in March this year, reflecting the continued strength and demand for rare masterpieces. Following the monumental success of the F.N. Souza Estate sale in June 2010, we were honoured to offer a group of works on behalf of the Souza family – which exceeded pre-sale expectations. As the undisputed market leaders in South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art, we look forward to our New York sale in September 2011.”

91 lots were sold, the most popular being:
