Visual
Arts presents a new 'Icons' exibition by Manchester-based
popartist Deesh .whose interest in visual arts
began during the early 1980's, with a particular
interest in comic art inspired by companies such
as Marvel comics. Over 20 years later, having
been involved in the performing arts, he is returning
to his roots in the visual arts.
His
first exhibition, Icons launches at the trendy Bar4Eighty bar in
Manchester on the 1st June 2006. The theme of popular culture captures
his love for super hero's in the shape of child hood icon Spiderman
and an artist that he has admired since the early 1980's, Madonna.
Other icons include a body popper, reflecting a culture that he
was involved with during the first wave of the b-boy phenomenon
that came over to the UK in 1982. The collection is complete with
more modern day contrasting icons including Marilyn Manson, Robbie
Williams and Tupac (2 Pac).
There
is no traditional method by which Deesh captures his subject as
he uses paper, newspapers, plastic, glue, water paints, markers,
spray paints, felt tips, pencils and crayons to create his work.
The work is multi layered and is very much a collage of textures
and images. The subject is created initially by pencil and then
the layers take affect. Once the first stage of the work is complete
and framed, then the second stage begins on the frame and glass
itself. This allows the frame, glass and the work inside to become
one. The final piece needs to be seen to be appreciated due to the
multi layered style.
