Kumar: Watercolours & Art on Paper Fair,

Natasha
Kumar first excelled as a printmaker; going
from a first class degree at Manchester to
teaching in Sheffield, and studying in Venice.
She completed her MA in London in 2000, winning
the London Printmaking Prize. She is now exhibiting
her Watercolours and Art on Paper Fair at
London's Science Museum from 1st - 5th February
2012. Included in the fair are her Carved
Jali windows that were inspired by the windows
of Bundi Palace.

of Mughal India: The Collection of Howard
Hodgkin, 2 Feb - 22 Apr 2012 |
On
2 February 2012 the Ashmolean will open an
exhibition of Indian paintings from the outstanding
private collection of the artist Howard Hodgkin.
Hodgkin has been a passionate collector of
Indian paintings and his collection has long
been considered one of the finest of its kind
in the world. The exhibition runs until 22
April 2012 and includes the main types of
Indian court painting that flourished during
the Mughal period (c. 15501850).

Paintings from India: Poetry, Passion, Song:
25th Jan - 27th May 2012 |
Ragamala
painting flourished throughout the royal courts
of India in the late 1400s and dwindled in
the 1800s, with the decline of aristocratic
patronage. This exhibition, which runs at
The Dulwich Picture Gallery from 25th January
until 27th May 2012, will unveil a rare collection
of 24 exquisite miniatures from the Claudio
Moscatelli Collection, in a journey across
the Indian subcontinent.

artwork by 'World's Smallest Engraver' sells
for £50,000 |
An
Islamic-inspired artwork by one of the UKs
foremost master craftsmen has been sold to
a collector for over £50,000. Micro-engraver
Graham Short, world-famous for his tiny engravings
including Nothing Is Impossible
engraved on the sharp edge of a razor blade,
painstakingly engraved The Word of God - a
chapter from the Quran on the head of
a pin - involving hundreds of hours of work
in his studio.

Announced for Sightsavers Diwali Photo Competition |
UK
based development charity Sightsavers today
announced the winner and three runners-up
for its Diwali photography competition. Sukhmanjit
Grewal from Hounslow in west London, captured
the judges' imagination with her stunning
image of beautifully intricate henna painted
hands and a diwali diva, which will now be
printed as the Sightsavers Diwali card for
this year.

of Face Britain. This unique project created
by The Prince's Foundation for Children &
the Arts is open to all children and young
people aged 4-16 years throughout the UK and
gives them the opportunity to create self
portraits which will be publicly displayed
across the country.

F Husain passes away in London aged 95 |
Maqbool
Fida Husain (17 September 1915 - 9 June 2011),
popularly known as MF and dubbed the "Picasso
of India", passed away in a London hospital
on Thursday 9th June 2011 according Reuters.
He was prominent Indian painter who created
controversy with depictions of naked Hindu
goddesses that were interpreted as anti-Hindu.
Five years ago he was forced to India after
being persecuted by Hindu zealots angry at
his work.

sale of contemporary Indian art nets £4.3
million |
Christies
sale of South Asian Modern & Contemporary
Art on Thursday 9th June 2011 realised £4,315,650
with the top lot being an Untitled work (Figure
on Rickshaw) by Tyeb Mehta (1925-2009) which
fetched £1,973,250 setting a new world auction
record for the artist. The sale presented
a strong array of works by the celebrated
masters of the Progressive Artists Group,
through to the biggest names in Indian and
Pakistani contemporary art.

Alixandra Fazzina chronicles Ramadan during

Award
winning photographer Alixandra Fazzina has
travelled to some of the worst hit areas in
Pakistan where she saw first hand the devastation
caused by the floods. She photographed a family
in Pakistan as well as a Pakistani family
in the UK to document how they were spending
the holy month of Ramadan.

Haider Raza (b. 1922), Saurashtra, 1983 which

Record for any Modern Indian Work of Art and
a Record for the Artist.

artworks are holding their price despite the
recession according to the latest Christies
sale of South Asian Modern Art sale held on
10 June 2009 which saw M F Husain's 'Ragamala
Series' oil on canvas fetch £397,250;
Rashid Rana's 'Red Carpet' a chromogenic print
attain £175,250 and Ram Kumar's Untitled
(Benares) Oil on canvas, 1963 fetch £133,
250, both from Asian private investors.

Works
of Francis Newton Souza and Tyeb Mehta were
the highlights of the Christie's sale of contemporary
Indian art , which included works from Tina
Ambani's Harmony Art Foundation. Souza's 1955
work "Birth" sold for £1,273,250
($2.5 million) as against an estimate of £600,000-800,000
while Mehta's 1984 untitled (Figure on Rickshaw)
went for £982,050 as against an estimate
of £300,000-500,000 pounds.'

was preceded by the auction of paintings that
raised £36,400 for the Earthquake Appeal.'

A world record price - £145,600 - was
achieved for Lot 328, The Tree, the Bird,
the Shadow, by Jagdish Swaminathan (India
1928-1993) against an estimate of £40,000

Pakistani and Arab paintings Sale last week.
It is believed to be the second highest price
achieved by an Indian artist.
