"Food,
a daily need, links us all as humans, yet what
we eat makes us unique as communities." Anjum
Malik
The
exquisite bronzes and pencil drawings in Hussain's Temporal Moments
reveal familiar items of food as poignant artifacts in reflecting
cultural identity. Co-presented by inIVA and Cafe Gallery Projects
London and taking place at both venues, the exhibition celebrates
the foods and spices native to Hussain's birthplace in Punjab, Pakistan.
Through perfectly rendered garlic, chillies, and walnuts and gold
leaf cloves the artist explores his upbringing in a "Pakistani
oasis" in Yorkshire.
Professor
Brian Falconbridge, President of the Royal British Society of Sculptors
says of the work, "Hussain offers a glimpse into his inherited
world as mediated through the wider experience of later childhood
and decades of adulthood in Britain. These bronzes speak eloquently
of the family table, the closeness of shared meals, the palimpsest
of fullness
