Roots
& Branches, an exhibition of paintings by
Matthew Krishanu opens in The Works Gallery, Birmingham
City Centre on Monday 22nd November and moves
on to the Wednesbury Museum & Art Gallery
from 29 November - 8 January 2005. The work is
inspired by a five-week research visit to India
last winter. During the visit Krishanu studied
the ancient cave paintings at Ajanta and Ellora,
and explored Indian folk art.
Both
these sources are a large influence on his paintings. He combines
folk art motifs with contemporary painting styles, often painting
on surfaces such as sack-cloth, wood and hand-made paper. Matthew
Krishanu is becoming an increasingly prominent artist in Birmingham,
with shows that attract a wide and diverse audience.
