Patriots
is an exploration of national, social and individual
identity through observation of the dynamics and
iconography of football supporters. Images of
individuals and massed crowds illustrate the assumption
and performance of shared identities, which reflect
and respond to the fluidity of modern-day influences
of (multi) cultural, national and international
society. The work is powerful and evocative with
a lot of attention given to crowd psychology and
subconscious influence.
The
exhibited work is in the form of large scale photographs, short
film work and video installations. These images ask questions about
how individuals and societys own identities are shared
with notions of patriotism and national identity. The first exhibitions
and publications of Patriots is from work made at Euro 96, French
World Cup, English and Scottish Premiership, and Euro 2000.
Ravi
Deepres, who was born in Liverpool of English/Asian parentage and
brought up in the North East of England, says that his project is
an exploration of identity. "I am using football as a powerful
metaphor to look at the current state of our national identity -
which is very much a multicultural one. As a British Asian photographer
and film maker, I am looking specifically at football supporters
and at the symbolic adoption of the St George's Cross".
A display
of his work was available for delegates to see at The FA's 'Football
for All' Conference. Ravi is currently hoping to display his works
in Germany at the next World Cup Finals.
