new generation of Indian art at 'The Quilon' restaurant
in London from 8 to 19 February 2006. Courtesy
of leading contemporary art specialists, Gallery
Sumukha Bangalore, the exhibition will open for
a special preview on Wednesday 8 February and
be attended by esteemed artists Manish Pushkale,
Laxma Goud & Rayis Komu. Each bringing vivid
experiences of their native country to the table;
Pushkale who portrays the Jainist sect through
abstract form; Goud through his teasing erotic
depictions of middle class situations and Komu
through boundary breaking installations.
During
the event, highly acclaimed artist and curator, Balraj Khanna will
appraise this powerful collection in dialogue with Art Historian,
Savita Apte. Guests will also have the chance to take a piece of
art home, by bidding in a live auction for paintings by Laxma Goud
and Paresh Maity. All proceeds will be donated to support art education
for one deserving overseas student in the UK.
The
Gallery Sumukha exhibition explores the consciousness of modern
India, with 27 artists contributing their own perceptions of this
ever evolving and intoxicating culture. India's rising social economy,
religion and class hierarchy are represented through graphic print,
expressionism, cubism and abstract form. Also consistent throughout
each work is a sense of pride in India's rich heritage defined through
varied mediums of copper relief, watercolour, acrylic and oil '
the combination of which makes for a truly powerful visual impact.
The
'Feast of Indian Art' exhibition will be showing daily at The Quilon,
from 10am to 7.30pm.
ABOUT
THE ARTISTS
Laxma
Goud
Laxma
Goud, a master draftsman, displays his versatility over a range
of mediums, from etching, gouache and pastels, to glass paintings.
Born in Nizampur, he trained at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture
in Hyderabad. In 1963, he won a scholarship to study mural painting
at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S University Baroda, where he became
a student of K.G.Subramanyan and specialised in print making.
His
first solo show was held in 1965 and further exhibitions of his
drawings, watercolours and prints follwed in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.
His work was included in the Contemporary Indian Art Exhibition
at the Royal Academy of Arts (1982) and in group shows in Calcutta,
Delhi and Chennai (1994). His paintings are in permanent collections
of the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), the Lalit Kala
Akademi (New Delhi), the Salajung Museum (Hyderabad) and the Punjab
University Museum, Chandigarh.
He
presently lives in Hyderabad and works as a printmaker and graphic
artist for television.
Manish
Pushkale
Manish
Pushkale was born in Bhopal in 1973. A trained geologist, Manish
also studied art at the art college in Bhopal. He is also a recipient
of the S. H. Raza foundation award. Pushkale has had solo exhibitions
in Bhopal, 1994, Delhi, 1997, Pundole Art Gallery, Mumbai, 2003
and Paris, 2003. And several group shows including the ones at,
Gallery Lakereen, Mumbai, 1999, Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi, 2000,
NGMA, Mumbai, 2001, Gallery Espace, Delhi, 2002 and Tao Gallery
Mumbai, 2003. The artist lives and works in Delhi.
Riyas
Komu
Riyas
Komu graduated with painting as his specialization but has extended
himself to sculpture, photography and video installations. He paints
pictures based on photographic references from the print and television
media. His randomly chosen subjects are charged with significance
bringing about a disturbance depicting an element of political disquiet.
He adapts images culled from the flow of the mass media, transporting
them into the pictorial space of painting and its anterior histories
of representation.
Riyas
Komu was born in Kerala in 1971, arrived in Mumbai in 1992 and completed
his BFA and MFA from Sir J. J. School of art Mumbai by 1997. He
is recipient of K.K. Hebbar Foundation Scholarship and Bombay Art
Society Award,1996 and Maharashtra State Art Prize 1995. His solo
shows include one at Sakshi art gallery in December (2002) and in
Renaissance gallery Bangalore. He recently had his photo show 'Grass'
at the Guild art gallery, Mumbai (2005). His participations include
video installation at NGMA as part of Art and Technology show in
2000. Has participated in several group shows like Audio-Visual
presentations in Lakeeren and Tao Art Gallery (2000), 'Engendering-The
Images of Women', The Guild art gallery (2001),'Words and Images'
The Guild / NGMA, Mumbai,(2002), 2D/3D, Visual art center, Hong
Kong , (2003), 'Generation 1, Saffron art gallery, Mumbai, (2004)
He has many installation exhibitions to his credit like 'Installation
and audio visual' at J.J. School of Art, Mumbai 1995, 1997 and 1998;'Critic's
Choice' at NGMA 1999.'Sarasu' at The Guild, Mumbai, 2003. Riyas
komu lives and works in Mumbai.
