BBC
'Bollywood' Proms: 17 July - 12 September 2009
To
celebrate the 10th anniversary of BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists
scheme, and the first Bollywood Prom, trumpeter Alison Balsom and
members of Honey's Dance Academy come together for a specially-created
performance on the South Steps of the Royal Albert Hall. From the
world's best-known classical music to folk music of India; the range
of events for the The BBC Proms 2009 Season is the biggest ever.
For the first time there are 100 concerts with promming tickets
priced at just £5.
Alison
Balsom is a former Radio 3 New Generation Artist who has gone on
to become a leading name in classical music, with an exclusive EMI
recording contract, who performs globally to great critical acclaim.
She returns to the BBC Proms this year, performing in several concerts
during the eight-week season, including the world-famous Last Night,
and the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists weekend at Cadogan Hall,
at which more than 50 past and present members of the scheme gather
to give 12 chamber music concerts.
Honey's
Dance Academy was launched in 1997 as the first British Asian dance
academy by choreographer to the Bollywood stars, Honey Kalaria.
It now runs from locations throughout London, training up and coming
talent. Honey's Dance Academy will appear at the first Bollywood
Prom this year, as part of Indian Voices day, which is a day-long
celebration of India's myriad vocal styles ranging from traditional
khyal singing to the Bollywood climax. There are plenty of opportunities
for audiences to join in music and dacing in workshops in Kensington
Gardesn and hear free performances of folk musicians from Rajasthan,
Gujarat and Kerala (16 Aug)
In
this performance trumpeter Alison Balsom plays the cadenza from
the first movement of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto (which she will play
at this year's Last Night of the Proms), before being joined on
the South Steps by members of Honey's Dance Academy performing a
Bollywood routine.
