Review
This
CD should have been called Rishi's Bombay ReMix given that it contains
no less than eight of his remixed tracks.
The
first CD, mixed by The Bhangra Knights has a real Euro-pop feel
to it with an eclectic collection of RnB tracks, advertising theme
tunes and even Preeya Kalidas's 'Shakalaka Baby', which let's face
it, should not even be in the same room as the "hottest dance
anthems and urban flavas" as promoted on this CD.
Bhangra
Knights' humble inclusion of their own tune 'Husan' (as featured
in the Peugeot TV Ad) is followed by the smoother Rich-remixed Craig
David and Sting and then by Panjabi MC's 'Mundian to Bach Ke'. If
this trio sounds a little mixed up to you, that pretty much sums
up the whole of the first CD! The middle part degenerates into a
messy mix of cool tunes, dance beats, the cathartic 'Yeke Yeke'
by Mory Kante and the sublime 'OK' by Talvin Singh. If Bhangra Knights
mixed this badly in a club, the whole place would be empty.
The
second CD is mixed by Rishi Rich -whom I can only describe as an
Asian musical genius. Anyone who can work with Jay Sean, Craig David,
Mis-Teeq and now Mary J Blige and still have a clear and distinctive
sound emerging can only be judged a genius. But in case you missed
any of his work, he's kindly included four of his remixes on this
CD for you!
I was
pleased to note the distinctly summery sound of Ini Kamoze's 'Here
Comes The Hotstepper' and Cornershop's funny tribute to Asha Bhosle
in 'Brimful of Asha'. It goes a little awry mid way though with
the more rock-like 'Govinda' by Kula Shaker. I personally find it
impossible to shaker anything to that track. Rich throws in Trellis'
'Habibi Gajuna' (the theme tune from Graham Norton) at the end just
case you weren't already confused by this regurgitation of Soul,
Hip Hop, RnB, Garage and Rock masquerading as Asian music.
I can't
help but wonder if this album might be best suited to desperate
Advertising Creatives looking for the next jingle, as it certainly
isn't my idea of the hottest in "asian-spiced" dance anthems.
There are just too many of the "often lumped together"
tracks on this CD to make it worth the price tag.
