Jay
Sean (28), the first British Asian artist to top
the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart with his first
release 'Down', has released the second single
from his forthcoming US album 'All or Nothing'.
The single, entitled 'Do You Remember' features
Sean Paul and Lil John and is launched via iTunes
on 3rd November 2009. It precedes the album launch
by a mere few weeks with 'All or Nothing' scheduled
for release on 23rd November. The past few weeks
have been a whirlwind for Jay Sean - he's been
in a different city virtually every day. The star
hopes to replicate the success of 'Down' which
achieved double platinum plus status in the USA
and sold over a million copies in eight weeks.
The
Hounslow-born singer/songwriter, Jay Sean
- real name Kamaljit Jhooti - made US chart
history by becoming the first British urban
artist to have a number one single in America.
Jay Sean’s single, ‘Down’ hit the top spot
in the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early
October 2009 – ending the Black Eyed Peas
26-week run at the top of the charts. At
the time, he said: "It’s just incredible
to have reached number one with my first
release in America. I've been grinding hard
for the last seven years releasing records
independently and now to have the biggest
record in the USA this week, it’s just a
dream come true."
28-year-old Jay Sean
quit his medicine degree at Queen Mary’s College in London when
he signed to Virgin Records in 2003. Despite having three hit singles,
Virgin dropped Jay Sean from their roster. However, with the support
of Asian music mogul Rishi Rich and his management company 2Point9,
Jay founded Jayded Records and released his second album ‘My Own
Way’ in 2008 which debuted in the Top 10 in the UK. It was this
album that came to the attention of Cash Money Records in America
who subsequently signed him to their label.
In
an interview with journalist Amar Singh, journalist for 'The Evening
Standard' (23 September 2009), Sean was critical of the British
music industry saying “In England the industry is set up more for
straight-up pop - manufactured pretty girl bands and things like
that - anything else is a niche. The American are not obsessed with
your background like in England. They place less emphasis on those
things - If people ask, I explain my background proudly, but ultimately
I want to be about the music.”
'Down featuring
Americas biggest rapper Lil Wayne, was released in the UK
on 26th October 2009 and playlisted by radio stations including
Capital, 1Xtra, Kiss, Choice, Galaxy, the BBC Asian network and
BBC Radio 1. Co-written between Jay and Orange Factory Music, 'Down'
is described as a sexy club anthem made for the clubs. "I'm
a very positive, optimistic person and thought let me write a song
about the idea that if you've got someone special in your life then
nothing else really matters, how you need to appreciate the little
things, explains Jay.
In late October 2009,
Jay collaborated with his official tour DJ, Bikram Keith and with
UK Award Winning DJ Vix to produce 'Down' The Official Desi Remix
- an upbeat urban desi remix for dancefloors across the globe.
To
celebrate the success of 'Down' in the USA, Jay Sean got officially
'Chained' by his label mates in Atlanta as a surprise on Wednesday
(28 October 2009) as he received his Cash Money Billionaires chain
- a very humbled Jay Sean said: "Wow. That's all I can say
right now. Wow!! I really wasn't expecting this and more than anything
I just feel blessed to be part of the Cash Money family. They have
my back 100% and this is just one more way of them showing me that.
They've taken me in as their own and this is an extremely generous
gift. I feel very blessed."
