BOMBAY
DREAMS TO CLOSE FOR A REVAMP
(24th March 2004)
Inspired
by the new Broadway production of 'Bombay Dreams', Sir Andrew Lloyd
Webber is to close the London production on 13 June 2004 for a complete
revamp. The production will be undertaking a national tour and may
be turned into a feature film prior to its relaunch in the West
End. "BOMBAY
DREAMS" produced by Waxman Williams Entertainment and TGA Entertainment
opens in New York at the Broadway Theatre on 29 April, previewing
from 29 March.
Andrew
Lloyd Webber, who visited the New York producers of Bombay Dreams
earlier this month said "Having been in New York, and seen
some of the rehearsals for the show, I think that the exciting developments
that have been made in terms of the book, the score, and the set
designs mean that this is the show I would like to see in the UK."
Andrew
Lloyd Webber's landmark production of A R Rahman's musical "BOMBAY
DREAMS will have been seen by over one and a half million people
since it opened in June 2002 and recouped its original investment
of £4.5 million within 15 months. The cast recording, which
is a massive top-selling record in India, has become a Gold Album
in the UK, with sales approaching 250,000.
The
cross-cultural appeal of this family show made it a hit with critics
and audiences alike. Conventional musical theatregoers have packed
the houses; but, in addition, a large section of the previously
untapped Asian community has flocked to the show, for many of whom
"Bombay Dreams" has been their first experience of a West
End production.
"Bombay
Dreams", which has music by A R Rahman, lyrics by Don Black
and a book by Meera Syal, is based on an original idea by Shekhar
Kapur and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
