The
Buddha of Suburbia: An exuberant culture-clash of music, sex, drugs
and most of all love and lust in their many forms.
A production with universal appeal
sharp, witty and funny!
Join
the insane world of Karim, a 17-year-old interested in becoming
an actor, and Charlie a Pink Floyd-loving punk in this fast paced
romp through the seventies. Karim wants to live life to the full,
and so do his oddball friends (a Japanese prostitute, a charismatic
theatre director, the feisty, rampant feminist Jamila and the one
armed Changez - her "arranged" husband).
Being
at an age when hes ready for anything, Karim dabbles in sexual
experimentation, women, men, and, of course, drugs! As he struggles
to balance this part of his life with trying to please his father,
who has begun to explore Buddhism in pretentious, middle-class South
London, Karims world becomes a chaotic journey of self-discovery.
Can Karim define his true identity in this crazy and conflicting
world?
This
is the first-ever stage adaptation of Hanif Kureishis award-winning
novel and successful television series, devised by SNAP theatre
company, who last year received critical acclaim for their adaptation
of My Beautiful Laundrette. The Buddha of Suburbia will
be premiering at Watermans the UKs flagship venue for
British-Asian arts.
With
ground-breaking dramatic visual projections, original dance soundtrack
and punk songs fusing together to create stunning, stimulating new
theatre, The Buddha of Suburbia is this seasons must see.
