Performance
Programme
1)
Reflections
The curtain raiser is loud and lively; perhaps the initial
atmosphere one gets first arriving in India. All our senses are
awakened as we witness the drama and contrast of the country through
pulsating drumming and energetic dances - welcoming audiences to
the spirit of India.
2)
Mughal E-Azam
Mughal E-Azam takes audiences back to the era of
the Mughal rule. It moves from fast paced music and speedy movements
to a softer, subtle mood and form of dance without warning. Classic
songs from Pakeezah, Umrao Jaan and, of course, Mughal-E-Azam are
set against a backdrop of the Mughal Empire and are performed with
grace, beauty and sensuality.
3)
Devdas
Devdas is based on a classic love story portraying class, status
and prejudice in India. Devdas journey through Indian cinema
begins in the silent era of the 1920s and ends with the opulent
2002 film which features high quality, colourful dramatised dance
sequences.
4)
Aaja Nachle
Come and dance with me, says the dancing diva Madhuri
Dixit as her eyes light up and she flashes her million dollar smile.
Her comeback film after Devdas showed her sincere portrayal as Dia,
whose passion for art gets in the way of a business venture by a
group of politicians. Dia undertakes the near impossible task of
producing a theatrical production using no actors and dancers, in
order to preserve her dance school. This is a story which truely
reflects the morals and values of India. Stunning dance sequences
complement the costumes which are very similar to those worn by
Madhuri and her dancers in the film.
5)
Bollywood Dreams
The final part of the show is a medley of Bollywood blockbuster
hits with one dancer after another lighting up the stage bringing
the masti (magic) of India with them. The finale wraps
up the cultural experience with all the performers on stage dancing
to I love my India followed by the national anthem to
end the show. We hope the audience will rise not just to
congratulate the performers but to celebrate their own individual
experience of the glory and spirit of India.
