South Asian Dance

From Random Dance Company's multimedia transformation in 2000, to Carol Brown's compelling Machine for Living in 2001, Greenwich Dance Agency has become the home for Dance Umbrella's installation work. As part of Black History Month the Greenwich dance agency is showcasing three different forms of South Asian dance from 20th Sept - 26th October 2002.

{Vena Ramphal / Mavin Khoo
Fri 20 Sep 7.30pm

Vena Ramphal , Bharata Natayam performergDA is delighted to open its South Asian Dance Season with solos by Vena Ramphal and Mavin Khoo in a programme which emphasises the plurality of traditions within Bharata Natyam. Music is a vital part of Indian classical dance presentation and this evening's orchestra comprises voice, nattuvangam (cymbals), mrdangam (percussion) and flute. Mavin and Vena will both supply vocals for each other's solos.

Mavin KhooThe two artists have very different training histories. Vena's work draws on Bharata Natyam as well as the Karana technique. Mavin will be performing a section from his new work Intimate Rhapsody, which investigates the structure of the traditional Varnam in the Bharara Natyam repertoire. This evening explores some of the rich textures of the creativity of classical dance by presenting the aesthetics of two different training schools.

Cost: £9 (£7 concs.)
